What is promession?

“Promession” is a newly developed alternative to cremation, and is one of the most environmentally-friendly means of disposition. Developed in Sweden, Promession (a variation of the Italian word for “promise”) is a relatively simple process that breaks down human remains into a fine powder, with no release of toxins into the air or high energy use as usually happens with cremation.

The body is submerged in liquid nitrogen which removes the water (70% of the body) and causes the body to become brittle. It is then exposed to vibrations that reduce the remains into a fine, organic powder weighing about 30% of the original mass. The powder is dried and any metals present can be removed for recycling. Remains can be stored indefinitely if contained in a vacuum-sealed container (exposure to moisture will allow for natural decomposition), or one can opt for a “green” eco-friendly burial. As Promession was designed to mimic the “natural plan” of decomposition of remains in nature, it is becoming a very popular alternative among those who want to make eco-friendly choices. Currently it is only available in Europe, but plans are being made to expand into other areas.

We want to do cremation, but when we read an article about promession, we became very interested in it. Is there any time frame on when it may become available in the US? Thank you for any information or contacts to encourage interest by US companies. P.S. Your company is NOT authorized to release our info to anyone for any reason. Thank you.

Finally a way to know that my live will continue on after this physical life. The way I picture it. I die, promession is my choice of burial. I have already changed my will to make sure this is what my body undergoes. My leftover biodegradable remains in the starch box is buried in my loved one area of choice. A fruit tree is then planted over my remains and I am grown into this fruit tree. I ask that the fruits of my tree are eaten by friends and loved ones and any others that wish to consume my fruit. I am now part of them and if the seed of life is fertilized in a woman by the seed of man and a baby is born, my life is as close as I can see continued in the child. I live to some degree again…wow,,,and it’s eco-friendly. Thank you Sweden.
