What is a viewing?

A “viewing,” also known as a “wake,” refers to the part of a traditional funeral where the deceased is laid out for family and friends to come and pay their respects. Typically, visitors will approach the casket and pay their respects to the deceased, often saying a private prayer to the loved one. Usually the immediate family is in attendance as well, and visitors can offer condolences and support. A Viewing is often thought of as an important part of the grief process, offering “closure” for the living, to help them accept the passing of a loved one.
