What does closed casket mean?

Closed Casket refers to a viewing and funeral service where the casket of the deceased is closed, while Open Casket refers to a service where the casket is open so that mourners can view the deceased.

There are many factors that govern whether a Closed or Open Casket is chosen – from the wishes of the deceased and/or the family, to the condition of the deceased’s remains.

Many grief professionals believe an Open Casket is better in helping the grieving process start with acknowledgment of the passing. Often actually seeing the deceased aids in the  denial phase of grief.
